Assesment and Developement
A functional assessment is an approach to figuring out why an individual acts a certain way. It uses a variety of techniques to understand hat’s behind inappropriate behaviors. This includes looking at environmental factors that might be contributing to an individuals frustration with learning.
A key part of a functional assessment is figuring out what triggers certain behaviors in an individual at home, in school and in the community.
During a functional assessment, the analyst gathers information and uses it to create a plan to help an individal behave in more appropriate ways.
The steps the analyst takes:
1) Define the behavior(s)
2) Collecting, Comaparing and Analyzing information
3) Hypothesizing reasons for the behavior
4) Developing a plan
The Role of Parents, Guardians or Staff in an Assesment
Knowing that your child’s or family memeber's behavior is causing problems can bring up many feelings. But the "team" is trying to work together to find solutions—not to place blame.
Tell the team what you’re seeing at home, school or in the community. This is an important piece of the process. Taking detailed notes (data) can make it easier to see patterns in an individuals behavior.
A functional assessment may not provide an immediate solution to an individuals behavior challenges; but it can give a more complete picture of an individual's struggles.
Then the individual's "team" can work together to take the next steps to help each individual develop succesful behavior.
